Theresa "Darlene" Doerr (Warren)

Marital status: Married
Comment:      I married my Prince Charming in Florida in 1968.  We had a daughter,  as we were working Bob's way thru University of Florida. Then we began our travels over the the south east and moved 26 times . During that time we had our son.  I was a busy stay at home mom, as our daughter raised her hand on the first day of school and stated (don't worry my mom can do that).  She didn't put her hand down until she graduated from GA Southern. With all of my free time I attended  Augusta State and graduated in 1997 with a BFA , Major in Sculpture. I have spoken at several conferences, where I also displayed my art. In 2012 my art appeared on the cover of a book by Lori Bennett "Dynamic Psychotherapy with Adult Survivors."  . Now Bob and I are retired and living happily ever after "spoiling our  grand children and our new great grand daughter.

Cheryl Bernette Dover (Chambers)

Comment: Since about the seventh grade I have enjoyed sewing. My sisters would often choose two, three or more articles of clothing, want me to combine them and make them a one-of-a-kind outfit and I would. I have contuined to do this even as of now.

Come September 1, 1967 Vernon and I were married. I contuined sewing for family and friends, then in July we welcomed our daughter Cheryl Lynette... that's when I really began to enjoy sewing! It was so much fun to design her clothes. November 22, 1971 we welcomed our son Bryan Vernon. He was certainly a lively one! He kept Lynette and me both busy!

Vernon and I decided I would be a stay-at-home mom and I so enjoyed this time!

During the summer of 1976, I went to school to become one of the first full-time Teacher Assistants in Buncombe County.

During the next few years I worked at school and stayed involved with our church activities, the children's activities, and sports activities and Vernon's activities. I was always the mom at "all" the practices. I really enjoyed my job but in 1998 I retired early so I could keep our first granddaughter, Courtney Skye Sizemore. Eighteen months later, Madelyn Lee Dover and five years after that Colton Bryan Dover.

Talk about a happy Nana, I have been! I was blessed to have each of them when their moms went to work until they started school. I contuined to take them and pick them up until Courtney began to drive. One year they were all three at different schools... but we were never late! Attending all their VBS programs, Awards programs, church and school activities, and sporting events have always been important to me.

Courtney is now in her second year at AB Tech, Madelyn her first and Colton is in the eighth grade at EMS.  We are so proud of them!

During this time Vernon and I helped take care of our parents. They are all four in heaven now but we miss them so.

I have always always enjoyed singing in the choir, Bible studies and teaching Sunday School. I am now teaching the Older Ladies Class at Mount Carmel Baptist where our family attends. The ladies are in their 70, 80, and 90s... I am the youngest one in the class and it's been a long time since I've been the youngest person anywhere! I am also in a tutoring group for children from West Buncombe, Eblen, And Erwin Middle Schools.

God has truly blessed me all my life and I am so thankful.

Oh, by-the-way, December 5, 2017 Vernon will be inducted into the EHS Hall of Fame for his community service all these years. I am so proud of him!

Marital status: Married
Comment: Graduated from Erwin in June 1967'

Two weeks after graduation I went to work for Carolina Power and Light Company in Asheville, NC. I began my career working in the warehouse, line crew, right-of-way agent, engineering technican, residential marketing representative, commercial marketing/sales representative and the last 9 years as a Industrial, Commercial and Government  Accounts Manager. After 40 years, in June 2007, I decided to retire from Progress Energy which was now the name of the company following a merger in 2001. In September of that same year Progress Energy asked me to come back and fill a vacancy  for "2 months" as the Community Relations Manager and after 8 months I decided to go back into retirement. From May 2008 until September 2009 I was Cheryl's number one assistant. I helped out with mowing or whatever needed to be done around our church played a lot of golf with my friends. However, I was getting on Cheryl's last nerve so I spoke with a friend at MB Haynes Corporation about a part time jobs working claims. The part time turned into full time position as claims manager. In May 2012 I was promoted to Operations Manager of Haynes Electric Utility. I have responsibility for about 165 employees that provide electrical line work for Duke Energy, French Broad EMC, Haywood EMC and traffic signal/street light work for NCDOT & SCDOT. We work all of WNC and Upstate SC. In May 2016 the Board of Directors of MB Haynes Corporation appointed me Vice President-Operations for Haynes Electric Utility and that is what I do today. It is a great company and I really enjoy my job.

September 1st, 1967 married my high school sweetheart CHERYL CHAMBERS DOVER.

Our prayers were answered and our daughter Lynette was born on July 11, 1968. Cheryl was an excellent Mom and it was the 2 of us learning the "parent" thing.

Our prayers were answered again on November 22, 1971 and our son Bryan was born. Now the 4 of us were on this terrific journey and it has been great.

Somewhere in the mid-70's Cheryl went to work for the Buncombe County Schools where she was a teachers assistant for 23 years and then she took early retirement in January 1998 to take care of our first granddaughter (more on that later).

I attended Western Carolina College's In-Service program for 4 years taking 4-hour classes off campus 2 nights a week and 2-4 hour classes on campus in Cullowhee.

Community Service caught my attention at an early age.  If my classmates remember I became a Jr. Fireman at West Buncombe Volunteer Fire Department on my 16th birthday. I worked my way up the ladder being a Lt,  Assistant Chief and then appointed Fire Chief. I resigned in 1983 to spend more time in my role on the school board. I currently serve on the WBFD Board of Directors.

In 1982 I ran for and was elected to a 4-year term as the Erwin District Represetative on the Buncombe County Board of Education and in 1986 I ran for re-election and won a second 4-year term. During my 8 years on the Board, I served as Chairman of the Board for 6 of those years. I decided not to seek re-election in 1990.

In 2008 I ran for the Buncombe County Commission but I was not successful in that election and have no desire to ever run for office again.

Some other community service jobs I have done over the years are;

Currently I serve as Chairman of the the Buncombe County Industrial Facilities and Pollution Control Financing Authority and as a member of the Board of Eblen Charaties.

I was elected as Deacon at the age of 22 and have been proud to serve in that role in 3 different churches. Cheryl and I currently attend Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Asheville.

Ok, back to the grandchildren. Our daughter gave birth to our first grandchild, Courtney Skye Sizemore, on January 6, 1998 and Cheryl immediately announced that she was leaving her job as a teacher's assistant to "keep the grandbaby while her mother goes back to work". Courtney graduated from Erwin High School and is in her 2nd year at AB Tech and plans to become a teacher.

Our 2nd granddaughter, Madelyn Lee Dover, was born on July 6, 1999 and she also graduated from Erwin High School and is attending AB Tech studying photography and videography.

Our grandson, Colton Bryan Dover, was born on May 20, 2004, and is in 8th grade at Erwin Middle School. Our grands are an extremely important part of our daily life and we love them with all our hearts.

Cheryl and I just celebrated our 50th anniversary on September 1st and God has truly blessed us in so many ways. She and our family are the joy of my life and I love them with all my heart. All the good things that have happened to me are in in a big part because of her.

We both spent time caring for our parents and we are thankful we were able to be there for them as they were always there for us. It is sad that they are no longer with us but it makes us VERY happy to know they are all 4 hanging out with our Jesus and we WILL see them again. God is great all the time.

Many thanks to the reunion committee for the great job putting our 50th together.

Comment: I left Erwin HS to attend University of Tennessee and graduated from Mars Hill College in 1971.  I got my Teacher’s Certificate from UNCA.  But before teaching, I worked selling TV advertising for WLOS-TV and then WTVR-TV in Richmond, VA.  Many jobs as I had my two children, Kelly and Ashley.  They have blessed me with five grandchildren whom I love dearly.

I taught 2nd and 3rd grade at West Buncombe Elementary and retired four years ago.

I now help my girls with their kids and live with my 90 year old Mom.  So I am back where I started.  J
