Comment: After graduating from high school, I enlisted in the US Air Force.  I was stationed at Lowry AFB, CO, Keesler AFB, MS, Keflavik, Iceland, Gunter AFS, AL, Maxwell AFB, AL, and Peterson AFB, CO, I served 22 years and enjoyed my time in the military, I was lucky enough to have played fast pitch softball which allowed me to travel all over the US with the Air Force team and a civilian team.  When I was stationed at Keflavik, Iceland I traveled with the Navy team back to the state to compete, I was selected to go forward with the Navy team to all world competition but my commander said no he needs to get back here he has been gone too long already.  I met my wife in Denver, CO and we have been married 46 years, we have 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. After retiring I worked several different type of jobs, real estate, main frame computer operator for Kanan Science, help desk for Lockheed Martin until I finally decided none of that was for me, I wanted to work for myself so I started a handyman business which I have been doing for the past 10 years, this allows me to take off when I want to go hunting, camping and travel.

My name is Don Wright and I’m the husband of Nancy Christina Sorrells Wright. We live in Virginia Beach, VA. Nancy has been blind for the past 15 years, and on top of that she now has Alzheimer’s. She didn’t go to the 50th class reunion because of her blindness. But she has always been very proud of her high school, and had many friends there. I want to let them know that Nancy has had a good and enjoyable life since graduating, at least up until the Alzheimer's.

Nancy and I were married in March of 1968, and soon afterwards she went to work at the General Electric TV plant in Portsmouth, VA, which is also where I worked. She worked there for 19 years in several positions: assembly line, switchboard operator, and various secretarial positions. She was the safety secretary until manufacturing ended in 1986. She was part of the Information Systems Operation team responsible for the transfer of the GE Portsmouth data center to the GE Indianapolis data center before the final closing in 1987. After that, she worked as fire safety secretary at Old Dominion University until 2008 when her macular degeneration progressed to the point where she couldn’t see what she was doing, and could no longer drive. Resigning was a tough decision for her because she thoroughly enjoyed her work there.

Nancy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2021, but showed signs of it a year or so earlier. Short term memory seems to be the first to go. Gradually, the long term begins to go. She is well into that now. I recently asked her if she remembered Clyde A Erwin High School. She quickly said, “yes.” That quick a response was unusual, so I believe she does remember it.

If any of her classmates that knew her want to say hello to her, click on the “Send message” and I’ll pass it on to her. She is not likely to remember anyone except possibly a classmate that was a very close friend. But it is worth trying. There is a narrow window where this may still be possible.

Nancy and I have 2 daughters, 3 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Our youngest daughter lives with us, and though still working, she helps me take care of Nancy. Our older daughter is a nurse, and she relieves me so I can go to my doctor’s appointments. Nancy is being well taken care of.

The “Now” picture above was taken in better times (1999) when Nancy could still see.
