1967-worked on delivery truck for Haverty’s in Savannah. Was accepted @ Jr College in Savannah but decided to come home and studied data processing @ AB Tech No deferments for Jr College so I joined US Navy and decided to be air control man Weak muscle in my left eye flunked me from that program. Qualified for aircraft electronics. Went to Memphis right after MLK ASSASANATION spent the whole next year studying. After graduation from electronics went to Jacksonville for duty. Taught other sailors to work on A7 aircraft flying off carriers. Had to travel to Yuma Arizona for temporary duty loading ammo and bombs for our pilots to fly practice in El Centro California. Flew in helicopter to Luke Air Field in Phoenix-spent time off there and in Mexico and California waiting on airplanes and new pilots to come back to Yuma. Returned to Jax(Cecil Field FL)a nd went back to school on radar and other electronics. Extended for one month then got reassigned to Cecil Field. Admiral Zumwalt was offering early outs and I took advantage. Got out six months early. Took job in Jax night club as assistant mgr. and bartender for Eugene Barnard-one of Jax Florida biggest entrepreneurs. Helped my roommate run men's clothing store and portable sign business-enjoyed living there because I lived at Jax beach with my long blond hair and dark tan. Met Artis Gilmore @ his night club(Big Arts Little place where his business mgr. would pay me in $100 bills from a briefcase in the trunk of his Cadillac w/leopard skin upholstery that Art gave him because his legs were too long to drive it. I saw some of the longest lines to go to his club and a lot of future stars in the black music business. Al Denson was a lineman for the MN. Vikings and had another club not far away. I enjoyed working in Jax and meeting all kinds of people. Moved portable sign business to Orlando because of city ordinances(lived in Altamonte Springs). Took job in Winter Park w/international cash register servicing Grocery stores and refurbishing older cash registers. Then worked for Gould battery building all kinds of batteries; I even built golf cart batteries. I was offered job in Cincinnati @ GM paying $8.50 putting jacking instructions in trunks of new cars, but Cincy was too cold for me. Moved to Asheville and worked for American Enka recycling waste nylon. Worked rotating shifts and hated third shift, but had wife and two kids. After 3 years, met mgr. at RC Cola and took over driving truck from south Asheville to Fletcher to nearly Hendersonville. Winter was terrible income and called Tampa RC Cola.. They never met me nor did employment app and held open route to Brandon. I had three days training and termed out on my own. My biggest surprise was Albertsons...had about 5 feet of shelf space. Pepsi and coke were kicking my butt I moved into duplex apt that had no walls...rear mgr. at Albertsons let me stay there while he remodeled it. I had a bed and shower, toilet and electricity. Wife and two kids stayed in Jax w/her sister. We officially separated and I threw myself into my job Unloaded truck three times every day because I was working and servicing my customers really well. Met girl at Winn Dixie...to say the least, she got pregnant. My wife wanted to know if I would be home on a particular weekend and I said yes, why. She said because I am bringing her to you. Why, I said (because she wants to live w/ her daddy). So much for a custody battle! I had a great babysitter...took her before daylight, ready for school, off bus, homework, bath; then I came home and took her. Put a record on stereo. Laid her down on matt beside sofa and we went to sleep. The rest of the week was pretty much the same except weekends when Tess and I would go to Albertsons and pull back stock for shelves, go to church in Seffner and grocery shop. My mom said to bring her home and she would help me raise her. Sherry was pregnant but didn't want to go to NC. She would keep the baby as long as I promised to not interfere in his life, so I agreed. Moved back, worked for Pearlman’s, got remarried had two more sons and a daughter and went to work at Montgomery Ward’s selling furniture. Tessa got married, had a baby (my granddaughter) and then the most unexpected happened...I lost Tess in a car wreck...thought I would die; but I gave my misery to my God and he lifted it off me. Haverty’s recruited me and I completed real estate school at AB tech and passed my test for real estate. Never used it, except for burying my misery. God works in mysterious ways! 2006, nine years after burying Tess, people quit buying furniture. And God stepped in again; Krafton Locke was my customer and recruited me for Appletree Honda to write service. No school, but my technicians trained me and I sold $70,000 in service all the while I met the person who flew the drone that killed the American who led ISIS in Yemen. Three wives later I am retired and working part time @ Walmart; love my job. I am preparing to introduce all my children to their long lost brother in Tampa Life is good, just didn't plan all the detours |

After graduation I married David Penland. We had one child, a daughter Sherry Lynn. We divorced in 1975. I remained a single mom untill I married Tom Keck in 1993. Tom had a daughter Tammy and a son Jack. I started my working career at Wachovia Bank while still in High School. My job was running a Burroughs Encoding Machine which printed account numbers on checks. After graduating I went to work for Interstate Life & Accicent Ins. Co. as Head Cashier. While married to David I accompanied him on tours of duty with the Air Force to Germany and Florida. In Germany I held the position of Cashier for the Base Bowling Center, Pro Shop and Snack Bar. When we moved to Homestead, Fl I worked at The Bank of Florida, Hale & Jones Insurance and the Personnel office for the Base. When the tour of duty was finished in Flroida we returned to Asheville and I worked again for Interstate Life and Accident Ins. Co. helping them train new employees. I then went to work for Ferguson Enterprises as the first Female Stock Control Clerk in the company. The Plumbing Wholesale Industry was pretty much a man's world at that time. I then went into Inside Sales and developed an inside/outside sales team approach which was successful and put the Asheville location in the top 10 in the company. The program was implimented company wide. I then held the position of Purchasing Manager for the Asheville, Hendersonville, and Franklin Stores. After that I held the position of Sales Manager for our outside Sales fource in Plumbing and Waterworks Sales. My last position at Ferguson was as Operations Manager. . After retiring from Ferguson I took a part time position with the Periodontal Office of Dr. Robert T. MacAlpine. Retired again and moved to Florida . Went back to work for 1 year with the Dental Office of Dr. Murchason. I have to say, I never had a problem finding work... It always seemed to find me. God has blessed me in so many ways. It amazes me how far he has brought me. With God's help, I managed to pay for a house, keep a car on the road and raise Sherry . She has become an outstanding woman, and is an Internal Medicine Doctor in Virginia. She is married and has 2 wonderful children plus is raising a nephew . Son, Jack is a good man and is a Tech. with a German Saw Company traveling a lot. He has one son and an adopted daughter from China. Daughter Tammy lives in Michigan and has raised 3 boys. Once Tom and I got together, we got into developing some rental properties and continued that when we retired and moved to Florida. We love the warm climate here and the relaxed and friendly people. Tom enjoys fishing in the many lakes nearby plus we are less than 2 hours from either coast. I have a craft/ trash to treasure business and sell on Ebay and in booths at Treasure House. I found the Love of my Life with Tom... He is my soul mate. I |
