Asheville – Mary Ann Young Chance, 50, of 20 Evelake Drive, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Chance was born May 1, 1949, at the Chelsea Mass., Naval Hospital and had lived in Asheville for most of her life.  She attended St. Eugene’s Catholic School through the eighth grade and was a 1967 graduate of Erwin High School.  She received her R.N. degree from Central Piedmont College in Charlotte and worked for five years at the V.A. Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., where she met her husband.  Together they moved to Asheville where she worked for 22 years in the endoscopy department at Memorial Mission Hospital.

She was a member of St. Eugene’s Catholic Church where she was a form CCD teacher and Eucharistic Minister.

She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister and is survived by her husband, Dennis C. Chance; one daughter, Alison N. Chance of the home; one son, Brian Y. Chance, with the U.S. Navy serving on board the U.S.S. Enterprise in Norfolk, VA; her parents, Joe H. and Lucy K. Young of Asheville; her twin brother, Joseph William Young and his wife Betty of Cumming, Ga.; a brother-in-law Michael Chance and his wife Jean of Brentwood, Tenn.; and four nieces and nephews, Jennifer Young, Kristen Young, Michelle Mainord and Scott Chance. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Francis T. Cancro at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Eugene’s Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.

Members of the Knights of Columbus will be pallbearers and nurses from the Memorial Mission Endoscopy Department will be honorary pallbearers.

Mrs. Chance will be taken to St. Eugene’s Church Friday evening where her family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
