Dr. Bryan K. Shelley, 60, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday
evening, February 9, 2010 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock
following a lengthy illness and complications following surgery.
Dr. Shelley was born February 25, 1949, in Williston, North Dakota,
to Keith and Mildred Shelley of Watford City, North Dakota. The
family moved to western North Carolina in 1961 when Bryan was 12
years old.
He graduated from Clyde A. Erwin High School in Asheville in 1967, then
Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee, in 1971. He went on to earn a
Masters Degree in Literature at Appalachian State University in
Boone, and a Master of Letters degree at Breadloaf College in
Middlebury, Vermont. Finally, he went on to Oxford University in
England to earn a Doctorate in Philosophy.
Bryan taught briefly at Wheaton College in Illinois and at Bryan
College before becoming a professor of British Literature, for
several years, at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
He is the author of a book entitled ‘Shelley and Scripture’ published by Oxford
University Press, and now a standard reference book for those studying Shelley’s writings. He was a member of the First Alliance Church.
He is survived by his mother, Mildred L. Shelley of Hendersonville;
two brothers, Stan R. Shelley of Hendersonville, and Warren L. Shelley of Jacksonville, Florida; a sister-in-law Jane Smith Shelley of Hendersonville; niece Elizabeth Lauren Hairgrove of Charlotte; and nephew John R. Shelley of Hendersonville. Additional
survivors are his aunts Hazel Pierson of Absarokee, Montana, and Edith Shelley of Greenville, South Carolina, as well as several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2PM, Friday, February 12, 2010 at the First Alliance Church in Laurel Park. The Revs. Ronald D. Glass and Donald L. Chapman will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bryan’s honor to the First Alliance Church, 1812 Windsor Dr. Hendersonville, NC 28791 or to Four-Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S.
